The Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University, Professor Abiodun H. Adebayo, has stressed the importance of academic excellence in any educational pursuit and encouraged students to balance their academic pursuits with extracurricular activities and spiritual growth, as the Omega Semester of the 2023/2024 academic session commences.
He made this assertion during his opening remarks at the Welcome Assembly of the institution which was held at the University Chapel on Sunday, March 24, 2024, to usher in the Omega Semester 2023/2024 Academic Session. He welcomed the students, expressing his delight at their return to campus and extending best wishes for a successful semester ahead.
Citing a text from 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,” he urged students to remain focused on their studies, promising a fulfilling experience for those who do so.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the university’s commitment to providing numerous opportunities for its students, encouraging them to embrace these opportunities fully to optimize their study experience in the new semester.
He highlighted some upcoming events which include the Convocation Ceremony of the university.
The Registrar, while making her remarks, echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s words, thanking God for the safe return of the students and encouraging them to strive for improvement in their academic performance. She emphasized the value of hard work and diligence, quoting the Chancellor, she said, “Hard work does not kill, it is only the wrong work that kills.”
The Chaplain, Pastor Judah Ola, delivered a powerful sermon titled ‘Setting the Stage for the New,’ emphasizing the theme of new beginnings. He encouraged students to embrace change, noting that new experiences require a change in approach, mindset, and attitude. He stressed the importance of making the right decisions, as one wrong choice can derail a destiny, while one right choice can rewrite it.
Pastor Ola also urged students to prioritize their spiritual well-being, citing examples from scripture and highlighting the importance of serving God wholeheartedly. He concluded with a reminder to be cautious of their associations, as the wrong company can lead to problems.
In closing, Pastor Ola reminded the students that a life without Christ is a life full of crises, encouraging them to choose a path of wisdom and righteousness in all their endeavors.
The assembly concluded with a sense of anticipation and motivation, setting a positive tone for the Omega Semester 23/24 Academic Session at Covenant University.
