The Foremost Private University in Nigeria and West Africa, Covenant University, has hit yet another milestone as it got licensed to operate an e-learning platform, known as the ‘Covenant Centre for Open and Distance e-learning (CCODeL).
The operating license was granted to the University recently by the National Universities Commission (NUC), scheduled to begin with Computer Science programme.
Speaking with the University’s media team this week, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, expressed regrets that four out of every five admission seekers into tertiary institutions do not often get admission into the university and affirmed that the university’s newly accredited distance e-learning platform will help address the admission deficit in Nigeria, and foster educational development in Africa.
He noted that the university, in a bid to address this deficit, had secured a license from the National Universities Commission to run an open and distance e-learning education that would provide opportunities for every admission seeker in Nigeria, and Africa at large. This according to him will enable learners enroll and learn at their own pace without the barrier of distance or the rigour of associated with classroom settings.
Adebayo said this open and distance e-learning platform has marked a significant milestone in expanding access to quality education beyond the traditional classroom setting as it underscores our commitment to innovation, excellence, and inclusivity in higher education.
According to him, “We have only been able to admit one out of every five persons into our computer science programme at Covenant University, and this is because of the post-COVID pandemic that has led to the high demand for ICT related education, and certifications. For us, we welcome this and it implies that every applicant who meets our admission requirements, but was not admitted, can still key into our open and distance e-learning programme.”
While stressing that the institution had secured license for only the Computer Science programme for the open and distance e-learning education, the Vice-Chancellor said that more programmes will be opened in the second year.
The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that Covenant University is one of the leading universities in Africa founded on a Christian Mission Ethos; born and driven by a vision to raise a new generation of leaders and to reinstate the dignity of the black race. He stressed that the University is committed to remaining at the cutting edge of learning that is based on the Total Man driven curriculum.
It is important to note that Covenant University, secured the topmost ranking in Nigeria, according to Times Higher Education’s 2024 rankings. The Analysis of the ranking showed clearly that Covenant University is among the top 1,000 universities in the world. Though ranked first in Nigeria, Covenant University is placed within the global 801-1000 range.
He appreciated the efforts of the Board of Regents of Covenant University lead by the Chancellor and Chair, Dr. David O. Oyedepo for the huge investments in setting up this platform and spearheading a new revolution in education.
